Interpreting Services

What is Interpreting?
Interpreting is the process of translating the word that is spoken from one language into the spoken word of another language. Interpreting facilitates oral communication from one language to another and is performed by an interpreter.

Difference between Interpreting and Translation
Despite being used as one and the same thing, it is to be noted that translation and interpreting are not similar. The only similarity between the two is that both interpreting and translation require a thorough knowledge of more than one language. Professional translators and interpreters should convey the intended message into the target language successfully. While translation deals with written documents, interpretation deals with the spoken word. An interpreter should not only have to know and understand the source language, he or she also has to know the culture of the country where the language originated. While interpreting occurs on the spot, in real time in physical presence of the parties for whom the interpreter gives an interpretation, a translator's job is not on the spot. The translator has time and access to resources to produce an accurate translated document, which is not the case in interpreting.

Forms of Interpreting
There are four basic forms of interpreting:
  • Simultaneous Interpretation: Simultaneous interpretation, as the name suggests, is performed simultaneously at the same time of presentation. Using special equipment like transmitter, interpreter unit, receiver with headsets, the audience can hear the language of their choice, while the source-language speaker continuously speaks in a sound-proof booth.

    Simultaneous Interpretation

  • Consecutive Interpretation: In consecutive interpretation, the speaker speaks few sentences before pausing and the interpreter gets some time to render the interpretation into the other language.

  • Whispered Interpreting: In whispered interpreting , the interpreter standing or sitting next to the small target-language audience whispers a simultaneous interpretation of the topic.

  • Liaison Interpreting: Liaison interpreting is a type of consecutive interpreting and in used in less formal situations. The speaker would take a break after each sentence to allow the interpreter to translate. Examples would be meeting people at the airport, guided tours etc.
Importance of Interpreting Services
Interpreting service is required :
  • To ensure correct communication between people who speaks different language.
  • Effective professional interpretation is very essential so that both parties to have a clear understanding of each other because in times of stress, a person's second language competency may decline.
Interpreter Code of Ethics
  • Confidentiality: All information received by the interpreter while on an assignment should remain confidential. The information should not be known to the outside world once the assignment is over.

  • Neutrality: The interpreter should be a neutral person. He should not allow personal opinions or make recommendations in his interpretation.

  • Accuracy: The most accurate interpretation to the best one's ability should be provided. He or she should not change or leave out anything that is stated.

Here an interpreter will wait till sentence is completed by the speaker before interpreting. Simultaneous interpreting is preferred when people speak many different languages and there is a large group, usually found in conferences and business meetings. Simultaneous interpreting requires interpreters interpret what the speaker is saying as they are saying it into a microphone, and the delegates listen through headsets.

Instant Telephone Interpreting
Telephone InterpretationTelephonic interpreting services are another type of interpreting services in which you can converse with your client or customer by telephone, with the help of a qualified interpreter. The telephone interpreting service is ideal for medical clinics, hospitals, government agencies, the police service, and probation services. Telephone interpretation is a three -way conversation, involving you (the caller), the interpreter and the client. Telephone interpreting is the process by which an interpreter provides interpretation via telephone for two individuals who do not speak the same language. The form of telephone interpreting is usually consecutive interpreting. This means that the interpreter listens to each sentence first and then render it into the other language. In other words, speaking and listening are not done simultaneously.

Sign Language Interpreting Services
Sign Language Interpretation Sign language interpreting services imply the process of using manual communication, body language and lip movements simultaneously to convey the intended meaning. No sound is used in such interpretation and interpreting is done using facial expressions, hand shapes, orientation and movement of the hands, arms or body. Such services are used in deaf communities. When a hearing person speaks, an interpreter renders the meaning into the sign language for the deaf person and when the deaf person signs, the interpreter will expressed it in the spoken language for the hearing party, which is also referred to as voice interpreting or voicing. Deaf people can also work as interpreters.
